2018: Master guitar builder Theo Scharpach

Floris: ”The idea for this project came about in just 2 minutes, but executing it took 2 years. Theo approached us with the idea of inlaying the back of a guitar with leather. I liked that idea, especially if we would make shoes out of that same leather.

Back then, I didn't realise what an insane process this would be. The design of the guitar is completely original and 100% new. Theo starts with a 30-year old piece of wood and shaves, sands, lacquers and chisels it to a tenth of a millimeter and ends up with a guitar that makes the world's best players bow in reverence.

Theo called his guitar the 'Memphis 'T FVB'. It's a unique custom built hollow-body Thinline guitar. The shape of the back with the inlaid leather is totally unique. The body is made out of solid maple, and the wood on the front is treated in such a way that it mimics the croco print of the leather on the side and back. Various layers of varnish give the wood the same metallic blue look as the leather. The housings of the elements are custom built. The wooden parts are completely made by hand. The back and side of the guitar is done in cedar wood from Madagascar.

Pretty soon after discussing the idea for the guitar, Theo and I decided to make not one, but two guitars. One of them would travel from brand store to brand store as a true icon, and one would be actually played by a young talent. We took a long time finding a purist player who could muster out every single note Theo put into this guitar, and our search ended with Daniel Stelter, a young and ambitious jazz guitarist from Germany. We gave him the guitar to support him in his musical career."
