Floris: “Every now and then we like to challenge ourselves to step outside of our shoe bubble and find inspiration for a limited edition series. The common denominator we look for is a focus on quality and craftsmanship.
I considered it an amazing honour that the people at Big Green Egg were willing to go on an adventure with us. Big Green Egg is not just an amazing brand and product, for many it is a lifestyle. Preparing your food on a Big Green Egg can be finetuned to Michelin-star level. We decided to make a limited edition sneaker for fans of the Big Green Egg, shoes that would fit the Big Green Egg experience perfectly.
We took a fairly thematic approach to the design of this Big Green Egg sneaker. During our research, the cheerfully whirling wisps of smoke coming out of the Big Green Eggs caught our eye. That seemed like a good starting point. When we got to work, we mixed sooty black suede with high-tech mesh on the forefoot, shiny black nylon on the side and ash-like rubber on the heel. Across it all, we applied a white line of smoke as a special accent. The bottom of the sole is finished with the colour of glowing coals. The rubber of the stabiliser at the heel has the iconic look of the green indented ceramic Green Egg hood.
These sneakers were, together with a limited edition leather apron, for sale at our stores, some of our dealers, and quite a number of European Big Green Egg dealers in the spring of 2021."

The heel features a rubber plug with a white ‘F’. This plug was inspired by the lid of the Big Green Egg. Just like this lid, the edge of the plug says: ‘Big Green Egg, caution hot’.
The green rubber at the heel features the words ‘Big Green Floris,’ partially in the Big Green Egg Font and partially in the Floris van Bommel font. The dents in the rubber are an exact copy of the dents in the ceramic housing of the Big Green Egg. The original 3D files of Big Green Egg were used for the design.
On the inside of the tongue, an existing ‘Floris van Bommel’ logo was transformed into a custom logo for this shoe. The original logo was once designed in honour of the woman who gave the company its name. For this shoe, the logo is adjusted to resemble the utensils you use to grill on a Big Green Egg.
Like the Big Green Egg, these sneakers are hot! Part of the studs on the tread are bright orange. You'll no doubt agree that they look just like the smouldering coals in a Big Green Egg.
The very first design detail we agreed on was the thin white line curling across the forefoot and the side of the shoes. The white line refers to the smoke curling from the chimney during a summertime Big Green Egg session. Floris and his design team thought the plume of smoke was a splendid metaphor for the relaxed atmosphere of a simmering summer night spent on the terrace.
