At the end of the design season, Floris writes small pieces of text about each new shoe line. Some will make you a little wiser than others, but they are always worth reading. Here are some of the new texts from this season. The other texts can be found on the detail pages of the shoes.
Floris: “This shoe gets his name from the ultra-lightweight sole. It's so light, you'll feel like you're floating. Hence the name: De Floter (The Floater). This makes me wonder whether we should supply knee pads with every purchase. With these shoes, your feet will feel so light that your knee might shoot up with every next step and—bam!—you'll break your nose. These days, companies are liable for just about everything, right? Anyway... I'll look into that.
These shoes offer the best of both worlds: a proper winter shoe with an insulating sole and a non-slip tread, whilst also being incredibly light and flexible. By the way, our Sturdi line is very similar to the De Floter range. The Sturdi feels somewhat sturdier because it doesn't have a lightweight sole, but it's a big favourite within the collection. The styling is slightly different, with different materials and a gum-coloured sole. So there’s plenty to choose from.”
Floris: "This boot gets its distinctive character from its slightly shorter, fuller last. Around the toe, it's a bit chunkier than its smarter siblings in our collection: the Sturdi and the De Floter.
Think of it as a pair of twins separated at birth, with one going to the gym every day for years whilst the other spent all his time in the university library. This one's definitely the buff one. I'm not entirely sure that analogy will actually help you choose, though. If you're still undecided, Netflix has a documentary called Three Identical Strangers about triplets who were separated at birth. It's a fascinating story that'll help you empathise with the situation just a bit more. After that, choosing should be easy.”
Floris: “I think I’m finally starting to understand how fashion works. In my twenties, I wore baggy jeans. In my forties, I reluctantly squeezed myself into skinny jeans. And now? Baggy’s back. It feels like we’re going round in circles, but somehow it still feels fresh. And that’s because trends do repeat themselves, but not all at the same pace.
The Earth takes 12 months to orbit the sun. Pluto takes 248 years. Every planet moves at its own pace, so they’re never lined up exactly the same way twice. Fashion works the same way. Every trend has its own cycle, which means you keep getting new combinations. This retro sneaker with its flat sole was trendy before. So were my baggy jeans. Just… not at the same time. OMG, I’ve cracked the code! I’m going to google what that means for me in a moment. Maybe I’m officially a fashion guru now! Anyway, back to the sneaker. Yes, it’s got that trendy flat sole, but we’ve given the overall design and styling a modern twist. It has a padded, comfy footbed, so it feels less flat than it looks. If this is your kind of sneaker, enjoy it!”
Floris: “This shoe is for people like me. People who are still in denial. People who dream of rugged landscapes, harsh weather and a log cabin on a hill... but still drive their company car to the office every morning.
There's a reason it's called De Bijler (Dutch for ‘The Axer’). We even considered throwing an axe and a checked flannel shirt into every shoebox as default accessories. Are you, like me, an office warrior who dreams of pine forests and campfires? Is your inner lumberjack never far away, but on an average day, the closest you get to a large log is the white A4 paper in your printer? Then this is shoe is for you. Go full lumberjack chic this winter!”
Floris: "I once heard my brother say in an interview that when he casually mentions being the brother of Floris van Bommel, people find it interesting. Since then, I’ve been making a bit more use of that connection myself. It really is a great conversation starter. Every time I tell people I’m the brother of Floris van Bommel, I’ve got their attention. Super handy!
Anyway, this De Trikker sneaker wasn‘t made by the brother of Floris van Bommel, but by Floris van Bommel himself—so even more unique! Within our overall sneaker collection, this is something of a basic style. It’s not overly bold or super sporty, just nicely casual and versatile, easy to wear throughout the day. As Floris van Bommel’s brother, I happen to know that Floris really likes this sneaker and wears it himself."
